Yo Quiero Glen Bell
By: Michael De Filippis

“You have to be creative and stand out from the competition”, this is a quote from the Taco Titan. Born on the third of September in 1923, was Glen William Bell, Jr., but his dream and vision did not come tell a later date. A visionary and entrepreneur from young age. When Glen was five years old he sold cottage cheese door to door to help his mother to put food on the table for the family. The need, want and will to prosper was always in focus. Again at ten years old; eggs, apples, and flowers were sold to keep the family fed. During the teen years he travel the country and learned of private business through selling black berry pies with great aunt Dye. With this knowledge the desire for his own business grew and so came Bell’s hamburgers and hotdogs in California during the year of 1948. The first operation was not what was envisioned and so the next hamburger stand begun to sell hard sell tacos at nineteen cents each. The tacos consisted of ground meat, chopped lettuce, shredded cheese and chili sauce. During these years Dorothy Taylor made an appearance as the lovely wife for six years, till 1953 when the divorce was finalized, a son Rex was conceived during the marriage. Personal love was found again in 1955 with the marriage to Marty Ahl. Striving to make the dream a reality it finally happened in 1962, the first Taco Bell was open in Downey, California. Bell wanted a crispy shell taco but this posed a problem as he said, “Preformed taco shells look simple today, but back than I had to figure a way to make them.” As things grew so did the philosophies of business; “You build a business onecustomer at a time, Find the right product, then find a way to mass produce it, An innovated product will set you apart,” (all of Glen Bell). Because the will of the vision was strong, Bell never lost sight of his start with one man as he said, “He was ressed in a suit and as he bit into the taco the juice ran down his sleeve and dripped onto his tie.” Though Glen pasted away on the 12 of January 2010, his dream continues, “We changed the eating habits of an entire nation.”
